Abstract:Surprisingly little is known about strategy workshops even if they are a common practice. The paper presents the first substantial exploration of the role of workshops in strategy development through a large-scale UK survey of managerial experience. The findings suggest that strategy workshops are important in formal strategic planning processes. They typically don’t involve middle managers and they rely on discursive rather than analytical approaches to strategy formation.
