Abstract: | This paper reports a study investigating cross-functional coordination in enterprise resource planning (ERP) projects. The collected primary data is related to ERP implementations at 4 large organizations representing different industries and implementation strategies. The case studies suggest three main patterns of managing functional inter-dependencies (here as: int-depcs.): 1. A lean coordination pattern involving intricately planned 'vanilla' implementations, 2. A rich coordination pattern based on managing int-depcs. through organizing arrangements and cultural interventions, and 3. A mediation pattern based on executive mandate or a dominant functional unit laying out the rules of engagement. |
