Abstract:New product development (NPD) and innovation are essential for value creation. However, innovation hardly provides benefits in case the rival companies can copy with little or no extra cost. This paper deals with appropriating from radical and incremental (here as: r-and-i.) innovations (as: inv./invs). Many significant differences are known to exist btw. inv. types, and the appropriability (as: appr-y.) conditions are no exception. Empirical evidence is provided by analyzing survey data from 299 companies in Finland. As a result, the effects of environmental dynamism and research and development (R&D) intensity on r-and-i. inv. are presented. There is knowledge provided on the role of the appr-y. regime in enhancing the potential to profit from r-and-i. invs.
