Abstract:Using the existing conversations in the field of strategic management as a starting point, authors of this paper employ a process of logical inference in order to come up with conclusions about the origins of entrepreneurial opportunity. This is made through equating the execution of competitive strategy to the exploitation of an entrepreneurial opportunity. First concept comes from strategic management literature and the second from entrepreneurship literature. Taking into consideration this assumption, five extant theories of strategy are analysed by categorizing and identifying the circumstances that define how and with what consequence entrepreneurial opportunity exploitation results in future opportunity. In addition, the 'outcomes' of strategy execution are represented as a function of the 'match' between strategy and environment. This is done with the purpose of extending and refining the Holcombe's et al. (Review of Austrian Economics, 2003, 16:1, 25-43) idea that entrepreneurial opportunity is based on prior entrepreneurial action.
