Abstract:A reason for and a consequence of airline (hereafter as: a-l./a-ls.) consolidation (here as: cons.) is considered to be scheduling (as: sch-g.) coordination (as: co-dn.) This dimension of a-l. partnerships (here as: p-ship./p-ships.) is formally modeled, with complementary alliance where stop-over delays affect passengers' utility. Compared are p-ships. where carriers are only allowed to coordinate sch-g. to the p-ship., where a-ls. can jointly set prices and schedules. It is found that co-dn. in fares and schedules yields lower fares and better sch-g. co-dn. Co-dn. in only the price results in lower consumer welfare than under no co-dn. An example of a complementary airline alliance hurting interline passengers is suggested.
