Abstract: | This study examines to what extent remarriage as a possible way to mitigate the economic consequences of divorce for women. The study was made analysing retrospective life-history data from the European Community Household Panel for 11 Member States. The method consist of two steps: to use discrete-time event history models to estimate the effect of income on remarriage and to estimate the effect of repartnering on divorce womens income using regression models. The findings reveal that repartnering has a positive effect on income. In addition, an income decline as a consequence of divorce increases the likelihood of remarriage for women who had a low income before divorce. |
