Abstract:This paper aims at proposing a model to map the evolution of a business Community of Practice (CoP) from the viewpoint of learning and knowledge management (KM) processes (as: procs). Based on evidence from seven case studies (incl. Xerox, Daimler Chrysler, Telco, bank(s), advertising company, ICT service(s)) and analyses of three best practices from secondary sources (i.e. Daimler Chrysler, Xerox), there is found information on the different evolutionary paths followed by business CoPs and also on the role of the organizational commitment (as: cmmt.) dynamics and the people involvement. It is found among others that a high level of cmmt. from both the organization and its members is related to the effectiveness of the Community in supporting learning and KM procs. The model can be used for mapping the CoP evolution, and the found knowledge to support management in understanding how to manage a business CoP to create value.
