Abstract:An important driver for economic growth are innovative start-ups. Herein, empirical evidence is presented on the effects of research and development (R&D) on new product development (NPD), interfirm alliances and employment growth during the early life course (herein as: e-l-c.) of firms. based on a dataset containing a sample of new firms as a representative of start-up population. This dataset covers the first 6 years of the e-l-c. of firms. Among others, it is found out that R&D plays many roles during the e-l-c. of high-tech and high-growth firms. The results show R&D mattering for a limited but an important set of new high-tech and high-growth firms, which are the key in innovation and entrepreneurship policies.
