Abstract:The purpose of the paper is to demonstrate the significant impact of women in the boardroom on board inputs and firm outcomes. The authors study a sample of U.S. firms and find that female directors have better attendance rates and even seem to reduce the attendance problems of their male colleagues. Female directors are also more likely to attend monitoring committees. Furthermore, the findings indicate that in firms with greater board diversity, CEO turnover is more sensitive to stock performance and directors receive more equity-based compensation. The average effect of gender diversity on firm performance, however, is found to be negative.
