Abstract:Based on research, international assignment experience (henceforth as: int-asgn-exp.) is suggested to enhance awareness of societal stakeholders, to influence personal values, and to provide rare and valuable resources. It is herein hypothesized that CEO int-asgn-exp. will lead to increased corporate social performance (CSP), moderated by the CEO's functional background. Based on a sample of almost 400 CEOs of S&P 500 companies and three independent data sources, it is found that CEO int-asgn-exp. is positively related to CSP, being significantly moderated by the CEO's functional background. Particularly, CEOs with int-asgn-exp. and an output functional background, e.g. marketing and sales, are positively associated with bigger CSP.
