Abstract:Corporate Planning departments must adapt or cease to exist. Either they serve the decision-making needs of top management or they become superfluous. Those needs change radically as the business environment evolves from boom to recession and then recovery. Success requires clear definition of the questions to be answered by each project, a team operation with management to find the answers and a willingness to expose and evaluate all strategic options. Practical aspects are discussed in relation to the setting of corporate objectives, quantitative planning, resource allocation, international expansion, acquisitions and profit improvement planning.
