Abstract:The result of a longitudinal study is reported of some of the earliest quality circle programmes established in the UK. The 27 companies in question were contacted in 1981 and 1985. The survey examines how many of the quality circle programmes have survived the test of time and in what circumstances. Forty percent of the programmes remain operative in organizations where senior management tend to be committed to the quality circle concept: the trade unions have been reasonably receptive or indifferent; the working environment is conductive and there have been no major crises.
