Abstract:The six bases of power and influence are examined: legitimacy or position, expertise, inducements and rewards, respect, information, sanctions and punishments. The four forms of political manipulations are illustrated representing both the positive and negative uses of power and influence: inducements; persuasion; obligation; coercion. In formal organizations political manipulation consumes valuable time, subverts organizational goals, diverts human energy, and results in the loss of some valued employees. To deal with the roots of this problem the following recommendations are made: to reduce system uncertainty; to reduce competition; to break existing political freedom; to prevent future freedom.
