Abstract:A study, using a comprehensive data base on Canadian firms, built up from census of manufacturing records to quantify the importance of entry, new plant creation versus diversified merger, undertaken by domestic as opposed to foreign firms. Regression analysis is used to assess whether the determinants of entry differ from these components. The authors opine that entry by merger is as important as entry by plant creation, and diversified mergers are concentrated in industries where entry barriers are high, and plant creation by domestic, but not by foreign firms is negatively related to entry barriers.
