Abstract:A number of unique characteristics separating the marketing of public services from the marketing of private services are identified. Differences in the environments and organizational structures of public and private sector organizations are categorized according to environmental forces and organizational-general public interrelationships. Differences in profit and nonprofit orientations are regarded as having implications on objectives, pricing, and performance evaluation. Three target market issues unique to public organizations are considered. Characteristics of public organizations requiring unique marketing solutions are underlined.
