Abstract:Advances in the field of geosciences and drilling technologies resulted in additions to the hydrocarbon resource base.Similar advances occurred within the downstream parts of energy sector. These changes are not recognized by energy analysts and thus these estimates and projections disregard their impact on the composition of future primary energy supply mixes. Technical progress is not restricted to one particular area or type of fuel, nevertheless there is evidence that the balance will tilt in the favor of natural gas. It is shown that accounting for present and future technical progress in long-term energy scenarios has a considerable impact on the future prospects for primary energy system.
