Abstract:The study is primarily designed to test the hypothesis that personal expectancies determine the behavior of some individuals and perceptions of social norms determine the behavior of others. The results show that attitudes correspond most highly with behavior for individuals who are attuned to their personal expectancies regarding behavioral consequences but unattuned to the social norms in their environment. Conversely, norms correspond most highly with behavior for individuals who are attuned to social norms but unattuned to their personal expectancies. A secondary purpose of this study is to compare various methodological refinements against one another.
