Abstract: | Widespread diversification of firms compels viewing them as a portfolio of activities rather than as entities competing independently in separate markets. The central question is the following: what would be the optimal direction for expansion for firms extending their product line? The product specification or product choice is considered a distinct strategic variable. The optimal relationship between the new and existing products is examined. The features of oligopolistic markets are described. Using the simple differentiated product duopoly model a lot of conclusions are drawn on product and market choice, diversification, competition, mergers etc. The Nash solution is characterized. The Pareto-optimal outcome is discussed. |
