| Abstract: | Strike trends in Scotland between 1965 and 1985 are examined. The problems arising from the restricted range of statistics published on the matter are mentioned. The comparison with trends in the UK is commented. Variations in size and duration of stoppage are demonstrated. Regional variations in strike proneness are analyzed taking into consideration the differences in industrial structure. A number of possible explanations for the changing strike patterns are set forth. Among the explaining variables the unemployment rate, nominal earnings, real earnings, the size of the plant and the percentage of females in the workforce are investigated. |
