Abstract: | The simple expedient or allowing a central distribution centre to hold stock back during an order cycle and allocate it to the local distribution centres as demand materializes was demonstrated to have a dramatic impact on the service performance of the system. The results depend critically on how the warehouse allocates its remaining stock in a run out period. Assuming the warehouse follows an optimal allocation rule, developed is a computationally-tractable approach for determining an approximately optimal amount of stock to hold centrally. |
