Abstract:The reduced supply of highly-qualified personnel constitutes a new challenge for personnel managers. Career planning is one possible approach to solving the problem and offers firms an instrument for the early recognition, promotion and optimum use of young and talented managers. The authors describe career planning as an instrument of personnel development, its place in the process of corporate planning, its objectives and implementation. Finally they focus their attention on some selected empirical findings and general advantages and disadvantages. The article is based on the results of a study career planning in theory and practice.
