Abstract:Several critical observations are made on the traditional ineffective tools of quality control (inspection, detection etc.). The statistical process control is behind the times too, because of its complexity and costs. The design of experiments (DOE) tools are now the "secret weapons" of Japanese quality. They are much simpler, less costly and statistically more powerful. The classical, the Taguchi, and the Shainin versions of DOE are described and analyzed in terms of technique, effectiveness, cost, complexity, statistical validity, applicability and ease of implementation. The characteristics of seven DOE tools are summarized.
