Abstract:The idea of worker ownership is highlighted. By the fall of 1981 the Hyatt Clark Industries, Inc. (HCI) became a 100 percent worker-owned enterprise as a part of the General Motors. The story of the creation of an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) is described. Innovative alterations in the layout of the operation, as suggested by the new worker-owners, resulted in a redesign of work systems that produced a significant increase in productivity. However a number of problems occurred later on which ended in a failure of ESOP in HCI. It was due to the predominance of legal and financial issues over the managerial aspects and effective participation. The lessons to be learned are collected and discussed.
