Abstract:Agrarian structure in Turkey, unlike that of many developing countries, has evolved into a system of "peasant proprietorships". The landless poor do not constitute an important category in rural society, and as a result the labour market for permanent wage employment is very small. An important feature of the system, however is the unusual pattern of seasonal labour demand and supply. The description of the labour markets created by three distinct types of agrarian structure is based on an analysis of the actual situation in three different villages.
