Abstract: | The effects of technological changes on the corporate strategy are examined. The relationships between technology and product development are highlighted. It is shown how technologies, products and markets are increasingly integrated. The concept of technological clusters is introduced and interpreted as combinations of technological opportunities within a product space existing within a broader space of product utilization. Distinctions are made among elementary, architectural, and utilization technologies. The role of market organization and technology management in the growing strategic importance of technology is stressed. Research and development policy can shape technological clusters in a number of ways. |
