Abstract:On January 1, 1993, the 12 member nations of the European Community will create the United States of Europe as often called. Under EEC rules, trade barriers between nations will cease. The question is, whether the big information technology suppliers of Europe as Bull, Olivetti and Siemens will be strong enough to keep USA and Japanese suppliers from capturing a sizeable market. A number of tables shown European companies with the best revenues, with the most information systems (IS) sales abroad, with the highest software sales, those which grew the most or that could not keep up in 1989 are presented. Europe spent USD 82 billion on IS in 1989, up 14 p.c. from 1987.
