| Abstract: | The International Maritime Organization Conference held in London in November 1988, outlined the new system which will improve the current practise. A Global Maritime Distress and Safety System /GMDSS/ will be introduced between 1992- 1999. It will take advantage of the range, quality and reliability of satellite communications.Almost 8000 ships have been fitted with Inmarsat satellite communications equipment. |
