Abstract: | When a firm - small or otherwise - embarks on nondomestic business operations, it may select one of the following three major options: 1. it may stay home and export; 2. if resourceful, it may invest in foreign lands and establish wholly owned ventures; 3. it may strike a deal with an indigenous firm and form a joint venture. Each of the three alternatives has its pros and cons. The various forms of international business dealings are investigated and compared. Some reasons of why small business is losing interest in exporting is highlighted. The problems of wholly-owned ventures are examined. The virtues of the middle path - joint ventures - are described. The criteria for successful joint ventures are summarized. |
