Abstract:New markets are opening in Western Europe and throughout the world as 1992 approaches. USA experience with deregulation over a ten-year period provides valuable lessons for managers debating whether and how to expand into these unfamiliar markets. Flexibility is the key to survival. The first five years are marked by intense profit wars, restructuring and consolidation of the position among survivors. After five years the situation changes dramatically as weaker players are gone, and large companies have cut costs and developed new products and services. It is discussed in detail what new roles of companies are required in the changed environment and what strategic choices are needed that are particularly crucial for each.
