Abstract:A research and development manager is faced with the problem of selecting a project. The problem is further complicated by uncertainty of outcome and the existence of interdependencies among the projects. Although it is evident that redundant projects can enhance the effectiveness with which the resources are used, the manager must decide whether such an approach is appropriate, and if so, what form it should take. Because the immediate consequence of parallel strategies is an increase in the rate of expenditure for a particular task, or a dilution of effort devoted to a single approach, the decision is a hard one to make. The model combines elements of risk, preference, technological choice and organizational prerogative.
