Abstract:A successful leadership change should not be left to chance. Such a transition must be planned and carefully managed. Any individual who is appointed to a management position automatically is the manager, but whether he becomes the leader depends on how well he manages the transition process. Companies should require incoming managers to have a one- or two-day transition meeting with work group members at least by the manager's second month on the job. The transition meeting is a good time to focus on the work of the group and thereby support the business strategy. After this, managers should follow up with one-on-one sessions with each of the team members.
