Abstract:Public economics, the currently popular name for the subject covered in this volume, has evolved only as a linguistic compromise between the earlier terms, public finance (to narrow a focus) and public sector economics (longer to say). However while the earlier nomenclatures merely signalled confinement to the economic problems of government, the current broader term invites an alternative perspective: public economics as opposed to private economics. The stress is on collective objectives and decisions as constrained by individual actions and information. A second theme concerns capital, whether capital should be taxed.
