Abstract:Many household activities are productive in the broad meaning of the term, i.e. they use human and other resources in order to generate goods and services. However, most such activities are recorded neither in labour statistics nor in national accounts. It is argued that it is possible to identify and measure these activities in order to draw a complete picture of economic activity; it is also stated that it is necessary to do so in order to have a sound basis for formulating economic and social policies.
