Abstract:In the first part of the article the nature and possible causes of the global warming is analyzed. The speed of the possible warming is described and it is compared with climate changes in the past. The author then proceeds to estimate the likely consequences of global warming. It is stated that, aside from a rise in ocean level, the most predictable physical and economic consequences of climate change will be in agriculture. In the second part the necessary efforts to mitigate changes in the climate are outlined. Any significant attempt to curtail emissions would require an international rationing regime, covering the larger fraction of world energy consumption, to ration the consumption of energy, or the consumption of fossil fuels.
