Abstract:The effects of profit sharing on the employment of nonsupervisory workers in firms facing reduced demand are investigated. The hypothesis that workers whose compensation packages contain a profit-sharing component are less susceptible to layoff is tested. Two data sets are used, one from a household survey and another from a survey of small businesses. The evidence, however, is of borderline statistical significance and is therefore more suggestive than definitive. Two subsidiary hypotheses were also tested.
