Abstract:A current theory about car industry claims that several technological and organizational innovations will mean the end of "Fordism". An attempt is made to assess whether the Ford Motor Company's recent strategies preserve the essential feature of Fordism or there are radical changes in the nature of the original model. Using the example of a French subsidiary plant, the hierarchical and spatial aspects of the company's international management system are examined. The implementation of the strategies is described and analyzed at shopfloor level and from the wider viewpoint of the division of labour between the sites.
