Abstract:The emergence of employee assistance programs (EAPs) in the 1970s made it possible for companies to help problem personnel. Through the years, EAPs have proved useful in helping so-called "dysfunctional" employees - primarily those addicted to alcohol or other drugs. Essentially, one of two patterns can be observed. Either these individuals repeat the roles they played in their families while growing up, or they carry the interpersonal styles that were present in those families into other social systems. The case of the dysfunctional manager is examined. Some examples are presented. The development and operation of a dysfunctional organizational culture is also investigated.
