Abstract: | The "Balcerovicz Plan" including the elimination of price controls, the reduction of subsidies of all state-owned enterprises, the devaluation of zloty and the imposition of a progressive tax on wages, was designed to move Poland rapidly down the road to a market economy. Results of the first seven months are summarized. The author's findings concerning the competitive responses of a state-owned engine manufacturer, a food product manufacturer, and four trading companies are presented. Results indicate that Polish firms are making efforts to adjust to the new market-oriented economic environment, but encountered structural problems. Recommendations are made. |
