Abstract:This paper investigates the hypotheses that the presence of foreign direct investment raises the capital-intensity of technology for a Third World country. Studies have been undertaken to determine wether multinational corporations (MNCs) adapt technology to the factor endowments found in the local market. Lall and Streeten (1977) summarized these various studies. The assumption is that the effect of foreign direct investment on the choice of technology goes beyond that of the firm or the industry, but to the economy as a whole.
