Abstract:Contrary to popular opinion, the economic development of the third world does not threaten the first world. Only a short while ago, our most influential business writers were warning that the biggest threat to U.S. prosperity was competition from other developed countries. The world economy is a system - a complex web of feedback relationships - not a simple chain of one-way effects. Productivity gains in one part of the world may either help or hurt the rest of the world.
