Abstract: | A central debate concerns the nature of the multinational company, with two views espousing opposite directions of causality between innovation and multinationality. The "proactive" view posits that multinational companies seize technical innovations in anticipation of their international market potential. In contrast, the "reactive" view holds that multinational expansion is a consequence of once-adopted technical innovations since know-how is less efficiently communicated internationally between independent organizations than through a firm's internal hierarchy. |
