Abstract: | Many manufacturers think that adopting lean production or total quality management or some other improvement program means they have a manufacturing strategy. They are wrong. In the turbulent 1990's, true manufacturing strategy is a plan for developing the skills and capabilities that will enable a company to switch gears, from rapid product development to low cost, quickly and with minimal resources. A company must think of itself as a collection of evolving capabilities, not merely as a collection of products and businesses. |
