Abstract:When the Sea Empress ran aground in February, the third biggest oil spill ever quickly followed, prompting even non-environmentalists to question the covert costs of pollution. Exactly what happened is now the subject of an official inquiry, but the basic facts are undisputed. While being guided into harbour by a pilot at high tide on 15 February, one of the world's biggest supertankers, the Sea Empress, ran aground. How did it happen? The article gives a broad explanation of the event.
