Abstract:Despite their popularity and universal use, individual performance appraisals may not provide their purported benefits and may actually be detrimental for an organization. Evidence indicates that individual performance appraisals, often referred to as merit ratings, may not be objective evaluations for several reasons. In addition, performance appraisal can encourage individual behaviour that does not benefit the organization and can cause a significant reduction in employee job satisfaction.
