Abstract:The nature of the multinational company is debated upon with two views espousing opposite directions of causality btw. multinationality and innovation. The 'proactive' view posits multinational companies to seize technical innovations in anticipation of their international market potential. In contrast, the 'reactive' view holds multinational expansion to be a consequence of once-adopted technical innovations since know-how is less efficiently communicated internationally btw. independent organizations than through a firm's internal hierarchy. This study examines two sets of hypotheses to resolve the debate and to develop a theory of innovation that incorporates international expansion.
