Abstract: | Based on an analysis and on an critical review on theory, companies are argued to practise two different types of stakeholder management (henceforth as: s-h-mgmt.): they focus i. on their organization's welfare (organization-focussed s-h-mgmt.) or ii. on an issue affecting their relationship with other societal groups and organizations (issue-focussed s-h-mgmt). These two approaches supplement each other. The issue-focussed s-h-mgmt. is shown to dominate in multi-stakeholder networks as it enables corporations to address complex problems and challenges in cooperation with stakeholders. As deliberation is the key to issue-focussed s-h-mgmt., it helps to cope with many, at times contradictory, stakeholder demands, enhancing the legitimacy of corporate activities. |
