Abstract:An empirical analysis of the demand for international reserves is presented. The structure used is the so-called error-correction model. This parametrically rich model permits an explicit division of effects into long-run influences, proportional equilibrium impacts, and short-term adjustments. Besides addressing the other conventional issues in reserve demand literature, the model explicitly incorporates the impact or lack thereof on reserve demand of remittances transferred by nationals working abroad. The effects of the disequilibrium error-correction term is quite significant.
