Abstract:Among the "timeless articles" from the 1963-1987 volumes of the journal this one /from 1987/ deals with the management requirements of research and development. The effective managers are successful not only in motivating staff but also in translating their work efforts and results into saleable products and services. The importance of communication both within and beyond the group is crucial in order to get ideas accepted. The manager is expected to be the group's representative promoting good plans on paper to sceptical engineers, marketers and accountants. He or she must create conditions conducive to good communication at all levels. Leadership innovation and flexibility are needed too. An analysis of the group qualities may be very useful.
