Abstract: | The most important labour market phenomenon is described and analyzed accompanying the "Big Bang" - Poland's abrupt transition from the centrally planned command system to a market economy. The speed and directness of this process which present both economic advantages and social risks, are unmatched elsewhere in Eastern Europe and lend particular interest to the Polish experience. The transition means more than just introducing a new set of regulations: it means abandoning familiar economic landmarks and deeply ingrained habits and attitudes, and striking out into unknown territory. A comprehensive labour market data set (1980-1990) supports the analysis. |
