Abstract:According to standard economic theory, volontary provision of a public good is, at least in large group settings, ham- pered by people's presumed free rider disposition. In this paper, actual behavior of individuals in a non-hypothetical situation with large group characteristics was subjected to empirical testing as regards the validity of the neoclassi- cal claim. In the case under consideration, the citizens of a municipality indeed overcame the free rider problem by vo- luntarily contributing on a large scale. It was found that 'economic' factors such as avoiding individual losses were important motivations, but political and other reasons also played a crucial role.
